Travel Insurance Europe
For holidays to Europe, be sure you have the correct Europe Travel Insurance.
With rich cultures, popular attractions and widespread use of English, Europe continues to form one of the most popular destinations for UK travellers. Each year, millions of Brits travel to Europe, both for leisure and business, with popular favourites including Spain (renowned for affordable family holidays), Italy (known for its authentic cuisine), and Greece (beloved for its rich culture).
Having the right Travel Insurance for Europe is critical to ensure you are protected should any unexpected circumstances arise on your trip. It’s also important to understand the latest EU travel rules, now that the UK is no longer a member of the European Union.
Medical and Travel Insurance for Europe
Europe offers both cultural delights and familiar home favourites to travellers of all ages, meaning it’s no wonder it continues to be a go-to destination. Yet the cost of medical treatment is never quite the same, meaning it’s especially important for those with any pre-existing medical conditions to have specialist European holiday insurance. Travel Insurance for Europe covers you for:
- Emergency medical expenses sought abroad (either relating to any pre-existing conditions declared, or sudden illness/injury).
- Repatriation – the costs of getting you back to the UK should you fall ill somewhere in Europe and require transportation home for treatment. More on this on our Travel Insurance with Repatriation page.
- Cancellation – if your health status changes or another unexpected circumstance arises meaning you can no longer travel as planned.
Understanding EU Travel Rules
With the UK no longer a part of the EU post-Brexit, there have been some recent changes to EU travel rules affecting UK holidaymakers heading to Europe. New EU travel rules to be aware of for your next trip include:
- The Entry/Exit System (EES) – requiring non-EU citizens to scan passports, and provide fingerprint/facial images at automated kiosks when arriving in Schengen areas for short stays. Expected to come into force by 10th April 2026.
- The European Travel and Information System (ETIAS) – a new system to be introduced in 2026 for visa-exempt travellers, requiring authorisation for some UK nationals arriving for short stays.
Understanding these rules is crucial to ensuring your trip goes smoothly.

Travel Insurance for Europe FAQs
Do I need Travel Insurance for Europe?
Yes, although Travel Insurance is not mandatory, it’s a good idea when travelling in Europe. The European Health Insurance Card or Global Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) is an important travel document, but it is not a substitute for Travel Insurance. While visiting Europe, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office recommends carrying both an EHIC/GHIC and independent Travel Insurance for Europe.
Please note that the GHIC does not always cover the full cost of medical expenses, meaning there may be additional costs involved. Even if you have a GHIC card, it’s worth securing Travel Insurance for Europe.
Your Travel Insurance for Europe will provide you with a safety net if you become sick or have an accident, your possessions are lost or stolen, or you have to unexpectedly cancel your trip for an insured reason. While Travel Insurance for Europe is not mandatory, the risk is not worth it. Not having an adequate Travel Insurance policy for Europe could leave you with a hefty bill to pay should something unexpected happen abroad and you need emergency care. For further information, check out our blog on why Travel Insurance could save you thousands.
What does my EHIC/GHIC cover?
An EHIC covers only access to state-provided medical care and is not an alternative to Travel Insurance for Europe. For both safety and peace of mind, we recommend you consider carrying both forms of documentation while abroad. Following Brexit, UK citizens can no longer apply for an EHIC. However, if you already have one that was issued before the end of 2020, it will be valid until the expiration date.
The UK government introduced a replacement to the EHIC called the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). You can apply for a GHIC on the NHS website and it should arrive within 10 working days.
Having an EHIC or GHIC will grant you cover for emergency medical care in a publically-funded facility. It is important to remember neither of these cards will cover repatriation. For more information, check out our blog on EHIC cards and Travel Insurance.
What insurance do I need for European travel?
Travel Insurance for Europe covers visitors for travel to any European Union country and also a range of non-EU states, such as Iceland and Turkey. Always check the small print of your policy to be sure your holiday destination is covered. Also, consider the upper age limit, pre-existing medical conditions, and whether you want a single trip policy or annual multi-trip cover.
Whether you’re planning to interrail for three weeks or take a short city break, we can help you find the best Travel Insurance for Europe.

How do I find the best Travel Insurance for Europe?
The ‘best’ Travel Insurance for Europe depends on your individual travel needs and circumstances. When getting a Europe Travel Insurance policy, you should look for adequate medical cover, cancellation cover that covers the cost of your holiday, and low or zero excess policies. You should also look for cover on any activities you wish to partake in and declare any and all pre-existing medical conditions to secure the best European Travel Insurance for you. At Just Travel Cover, we will compare Travel Insurance policies for you and only show you policies that best match your unique travel needs. What should I know about the new EU travel rules coming soon?
The new Entry/Exit System (EES) is expected to become fully-operational by 10th April 2026. It requires non-EU citizens to scan their passports and provide fingerprints/facial images when arriving at Schengen areas for short stays (90 days or less per 180-day period). It’s important to be aware of this as, until the new system is fully adopted, this could result in some delays when arriving at your next European destination. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will also be introduced next year for visa-exempt travellers, and will be required for some UK nationals heading to Europe on short-stay journeys. Staying up to date with the latest EU travel rules means you’re prepared for potential longer wait times when travelling within the EU, and can plan accordingly.
Should I choose a single or annual multi-trip policy for my Travel Insurance for Europe?
This largely depends on your travel habits and your reasons for travelling. An annual European Travel Insurance policy will provide cover for all countries in Europe if you plan on taking multiple holidays within a year, but always check which countries are included. This is because some insurers do not class certain countries as Europe, but some do. For example, to be covered for Egypt, you would need a worldwide policy or a single trip policy to Egypt. If you are only expecting to make one trip to Europe, a single-trip policy will be fine.
Is there an upper-age limit for European Travel Insurance?
No. At Just Travel Cover, we offer Travel Insurance to Europe for people of all ages, with no upper-age limit. Whether you’re aged over 65, 70, 80 or beyond and are heading to Europe on your travels, we’ll be happy to help you find specialist Europe Travel Insurance that meets your needs.
