What Changes When You Buy Travel Insurance in Your 60s?
Turning 60 does not automatically make Travel Insurance difficult to find. It is, however, a useful time to review whether an existing policy still fits the way you travel.
You may be taking more holidays, staying away for longer or booking a cruise or higher-value trip. Your medical history may also have changed since you last bought cover. The policy needs to reflect the holiday you are taking now, not the cover you used several years ago.
Age 60 and Retirement
There is no default retirement age in the UK, and 60 is not the current State Pension age. People retire at different times depending on their work and pensions. If retirement gives you more freedom to travel, check the maximum trip length and cancellation cover before committing to a longer or more expensive holiday. You can check your own State Pension age on GOV.UK.
Which Policy Suits Your Travel Plans?
One main holiday
Single trip Travel Insurance covers one holiday for the dates and destinations you choose. It’s a straightforward option if you’re planning one trip, whether that’s a short break, a couple of weeks away or a longer holiday.
Several holidays a year
Annual multi-trip Travel Insurance can be useful if you plan to travel several times in a 12 month period. You’ll still need to complete medical screening and declare the medical conditions you’re asked about when getting a quote.
Travelling as a couple
If you’re travelling with your partner, you can include both travellers on the same policy. This can be particularly helpful if one person’s health means you both need to cancel the holiday or return home early, subject to the policy terms.
Cruises, golf and more active holidays
Your 60s might mean more time to take the holidays you enjoy, rather than a different type of holiday altogether. If you’re taking a cruise, skiing or planning other activities, check whether the cover is included as standard or needs to be added. The important thing is that your policy reflects what you’ll actually be doing while you’re away.
Over 60s Travel Insurance With Medical Conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, tell us about the conditions you’re asked to declare during medical screening, including those managed with regular medication or treatment. We’ll use this information to show you the policies available for your circumstances.
You may be asked about medication, recent appointments, hospital stays, tests or changes in treatment, so having these details to hand can make medical screening easier.
Conditions We Commonly Help With
Atrial fibrillation
We can help you find Travel Insurance that covers AF and other heart and circulatory conditions. During medical screening, we’ll ask some questions about your condition and treatment. Find out more about Travel Insurance for atrial fibrillation.
Diabetes
We can help cover both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including if you have other medical conditions alongside it. Read our guide on Travel Insurance for diabetes.
Arthritis and joint conditions
Whether you have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or another joint condition, it’s important to declare it when arranging your Travel Insurance. Find out more about Travel Insurance for Joint & Bone Conditions.
High blood pressure and circulatory conditions.
We can help cover a range of heart and circulatory conditions, including high blood pressure, whether recently diagnosed or something you’ve had for some time. Explore Travel Insurance for heart and circulatory conditions.
Travelling With Medication?
Declare the medical condition connected to any regular medication. Take enough medicine for the trip, keep it in its original packaging and check the rules for your destination. The NHS guidance on taking medicines abroad explains what to check, including controlled-drug requirements.
Our Expert Says
“If you’re travelling in your 60s, think about the kind of holidays you have planned and make sure your cover fits them. If you’re going away for longer, taking a cruise or have booked a more expensive holiday, take a closer look at things like trip-length and cancellation limits. It’s important to compare what each policy gives you, not just the price.”

Planning a Cruise or Higher-Value Holiday?
Cruises are a popular choice in retirement, but standard Travel Insurance does not always include cruise-specific benefits. Cruise Travel Insurance for over 60s can include cover for cabin confinement, missed port departure and itinerary changes, depending on the policy.
Enter every country on the itinerary, including cruise ports, and check the cruise line’s medical and repatriation requirements. For a world cruise, also check that the policy covers the full duration and every destination.
Cancellation cover should match the non-refundable cost per person. If the holiday costs more than the limit included in the main policy, explore Travel Insurance for higher-value holidays or Boost Cancellation, which can add up to £25,000 per person to eligible Single Trip policies. Terms and exclusions apply.
Check Bank-Account Travel Insurance
If Travel Insurance is included with a packaged bank account, do not assume it still covers everything you need. Check the age limit, maximum trip length, destinations and whether your medical conditions have been declared. Cruise cover, travel outside of Europe or longer trips may require an upgrade.
What Can Over 60s Travel Insurance Cover?
Cover depends on the insurer and policy. Options available through our panel can include:
- Emergency medical expenses and repatriation up to £10 Million
- Cancellation cover up to £22,500
- Curtailment cover up to £12,500 per person
- Baggage cover up to £3,500 per person
- Missed departure cover up to £1,500 per person
- 24-hour emergency medical assistance
Single Trip cover can be available for longer holidays, with selected policies offering trips of up to 365 days. The maximum trip length available will depend on factors including your age, destination and the insurer, so check the limits shown with your quote.
Travel insurance is designed for unexpected events, and there will be exclusions and limits. Depending on the policy, you will not be covered for:
- Medical conditions that should have been declared but were not included during medical screening.
- Travelling against medical advice or travelling when you are not fit to travel, where excluded by the policy.
- Known events or circumstances you were already aware of when you bought the policy.
- Trips longer than the maximum duration allowed by your policy.
- Activities, sports or cruises that are not included in your chosen cover.
- Claims above the policy limits or costs that fall within the excess you have agreed to pay.
- Planned medical treatment abroad
What Should You Compare Between Policies?
We’ll show you policies available for the information you provide, but there can still be important differences between them. Don’t compare on price alone. Look at:
- Maximum trip length and the geographical area covered.
- Cancellation cover against the non-refundable cost of your holiday per person.
- Emergency medical expenses and repatriation limits.
- The excess you would need to pay if you make a claim.
- Cruise, activity, gadget or medical-equipment cover if you need it for your holiday.
- Any important exclusions or benefit limits that could affect your plans.
Different insurers and cover levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) can offer different benefits, limits and excesses. Compare what each policy actually provides alongside the price to choose the cover that best suits your holiday.

Over 60s Travel Insurance FAQs
Is Travel Insurance more difficult to get after 60?
Turning 60 does not usually prevent you from finding Travel Insurance. Prices and policy limits can change with age, but the destination, trip length, medical history and cover selected also affect the options available. Comparing specialist policies becomes more important if you have medical conditions or are planning a longer trip.
How much does Travel Insurance for over 60s cost?
The price is based on your age, destination, trip length, medical history, holiday cost and chosen cover. A short European break will usually be assessed differently from a long trip to the USA or Caribbean, where medical treatment can be expensive. Compare the cancellation limit and excess as well as the premium.
What is the best Travel Insurance for over 60s?
There really is no such thing as the “best” policy. Policies vary by insurer and you’ll want to look at who the claims company is too, should you need to make one. The best policy for you is the one that covers your full trip, declared medical conditions and non-refundable holiday cost. Check the medical and repatriation limits, excess, maximum trip length and any cruise or activity cover you need. Just Travel Cover was voted Best Travel Insurance Provider at the 2023 Insurance Choice Awards and Highly Commended in 2025, but the right policy still depends on your individual plans.
Can I get Travel Insurance over 60 with a medical condition?
Holiday cover is available for hundreds of conditions through selected insurers, subject to medical screening. Declare every condition requested, even if it is well controlled or has not affected you recently. Our pre-existing medical conditions Travel Insurance guide explains what information you may need.
Can I get Travel Insurance while awaiting a diagnosis?
If you’re waiting for a diagnosis for symptoms you’re currently experiencing, we’re unable to provide cover until you have a confirmed diagnosis.
If you already have a confirmed diagnosis but are waiting for further treatment or investigation, cover may still be available. However, cancellation, curtailment or trip interruption won’t be covered if an appointment for the treatment or investigation conflicts with your trip, or if the condition you’re awaiting treatment or investigation for means you’re unable to travel.
Being on a waiting list does not affect medical cover while you’re away for conditions you’ve declared and that have been accepted for cover. If your diagnosis changes before you travel, let us know as soon as possible so we can advise you on the next steps.
Is Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance better in your 60s?
If you’re travelling more often in your 60s, choosing between Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip cover can make a real difference. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance may suit you if you’re taking several shorter holidays throughout the year, while Single Trip cover may be a better fit for one main holiday or a longer stay.
Don’t assume Annual cover is automatically better value because you’re travelling several times. Maximum trip lengths can vary by age and policy, and every holiday taken under an Annual policy must fall within the permitted duration. Compare the cost and trip-length limits of Annual cover against separate Single Trip policies, particularly if you’re planning a mix of shorter breaks and longer holidays.
Can I get long-stay Travel Insurance over 60?
Yes. If you’re planning to make the most of having more time to travel in your 60s, selected Single Trip policies can cover longer holidays of up to 365 days. This could be useful for an extended stay abroad, a longer cruise or a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
The maximum trip length available will depend on factors such as your age, destination, medical history and the insurer, so 365 days won’t be available in every case. Enter your travel dates when getting a quote and we’ll show you the policies available for your trip.
Can I get Travel Insurance for a Cruise after 60?
Cruise cover is available through selected policies. Check whether benefits such as cabin confinement, missed port departure and itinerary changes are included, along with every destination and the full cruise duration. Read our over 60s cruise Travel Insurance guide.
Can my partner be included on the same policy?
Yes, you can usually include your partner or travelling companion on the same policy, subject to the insurer’s terms. Having cover together can be particularly important if one person’s health means you both need to cancel the holiday or return home early, where this is covered by the policy.
Each traveller will still need to provide details of their own pre-existing medical conditions during medical screening, so the policies shown take both travellers’ circumstances into account.
Do I need separate cover if my bank account includes Travel Insurance?
Your existing bank-account policy may be enough, but check it before every trip. Look at the age limit, maximum trip length, medical-condition rules, cancellation limit and cruise or activity cover. If the policy does not match the holiday, you may need an upgrade or separate Travel Insurance.
Does a GHIC replace Travel Insurance for European Holidays?
A GHIC can help you access medically necessary state healthcare in eligible countries. It does not cover everything, including repatriation, cancellation or baggage, so it should be used alongside Travel Insurance rather than instead of it.
Where can I travel with over 60s Travel Insurance?
Cover can be available for UK, European and worldwide holidays. Select the correct geographical area, include every destination and check the latest FCDO travel advice. Travelling against FCDO advice can affect cover.
