Weight Loss Injections and Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance and Weight Loss Injections
With more than 1.5 million people in the UK now taking GLP-1 drugs such as Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss and diabetes management, it’s important to understand how these medications affect your Travel Insurance.
Failing to declare prescription medication – even if not linked to a pre-existing medical condition – can leave you uninsured. The average medical bill abroad now stands at £1,528, and in some countries treatment can run into tens of thousands of pounds.
Do You Need to Declare Weight Loss Injections?
Yes. If you are using weight loss injections, you must declare them when buying Travel Insurance.
If you are taking them for a diagnosed medical condition (such as obesity or diabetes), you’ll also need to declare the underlying condition.
If you have elected to take weight loss injections purely for weight management, you should still declare them – provided they are prescribed through a legitimate source such as a private prescription from a pharmacy chain or licensed online pharmacy.
Please note there is no cover if the weight loss drug has been obtained from any other source.
Why you need to declare…
The Financial Ombudsman Service reported a 19% rise in Travel Insurance disputes in 2024 with medical disclosure disputes leading the cause.
Failure to disclose any pre-existing medical condition(s) and/or prescribed medication can invalidate your Travel Insurance policy and leave you liable for the cost of any emergency medical treatment abroad, including repatriation home.
