The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has released its latest figures, revealing that UK travel insurers paid out £472 million last year to support holidaymakers who faced unexpected emergencies abroad.
More than 500,000 claims were settled, ranging from lost luggage to trip cancellations — but the largest share of payouts went towards covering emergency medical expenses and repatriation.
In fact, medical claims accounted for over a third of all payouts, totalling £262 million, with the average medical claim coming in at £1,528.
Some were much higher, and several ran into six figures – in one case, the bill for emergency treatment and repatriation from the United States exceeded £1 million.
These figures underline just how valuable Travel Insurance can be, and without cover, holidaymakers could be left facing bills that would not only ruin their trip, but have a lasting financial impact.
The data comes at a time when the cost of medical treatment abroad continues to rise – particularly in long-haul destinations such as the USA.
While many households are feeling the pinch due to the cost of living, it can be tempting to cut back on extras. But when it comes to Travel Insurance, doing so can be a false economy. Even a straightforward hospital visit overseas can cost thousands of pounds, and arranging transport (often with a medical professional) back to the UK can easily push the total into five or even six figures.
The question travellers should be asking themselves is: can you really afford not to be insured?
To help holidaymakers prepare, the ABI has also published its “Eight to Embark” checklist:
Following these steps can give you the confidence that your policy will work for you when you need it most.
