Japan Cruise Travel Insurance

Explore Japan by Cruise

Blending ancient culture with modern attractions, a Japanese cruise is a great way to explore the country’s iconic sights. Most itineraries cover the major islands (Honshu, Kyushu, and Hokkaido) as well as popular cities – from Tokyo and Osaka to Hiroshima. Whether visiting the many temples, admiring the cherry blossoms, or viewing the famous Mount Fuji, there’s so much to see from the moment you step on the dock. To help you make the most of your memorable trip, we offer specialist Travel Insurance for Cruises in Japan, so you focus on living in the moment, instead of worrying about unexpected travel and medical expenses.

Why Japan Cruise Travel Insurance is Important

Whether you’re cruising around Japan or somewhere else in the world, it’s important to have cruise-specific Travel Insurance. With most cruise lines, this is now no longer an option; it’s actually a requirement for you to be able to board your cruise, meaning it’s important to comply. If you are travelling with any pre-existing medical conditions onboard your cruise, it’s also important to have cruise Travel Insurance that covers these conditions. This is to protect you against costly medical bills should you need to access treatment onboard the ship in an emergency, or disembark to a hospital on land. You must declare any medical conditions when taking out your cruise insurance initially in order to be covered for any future claims.

Protect Your Investment with Cancellation Cover

Like most holidays, a cruise is a long-awaited event and often the main travel event of the year for many travellers. Though it may not be nice to think about, it’s important to make sure that should your plans change unexpectedly and you can no longer travel, the costs of your cruise will be covered. This could be due to unforeseen circumstances like illness, injury, or bereavement, which can be challenging enough without ending up out of pocket. That’s where cancellation cover comes in, enabling you to reclaim the costs of your holiday should you have to cancel unexpectedly.

For maximum protection, we recommend arranging Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked your cruise, as your cancellation cover will start right away. We also recommend ensuring that the cover included is more than enough to cover the costs of your trip. As standard, our policies include up to £12,500 cancellation cover per person, but if you’ve booked a higher-value cruise and think you’ll need more cover, we also offer Top-Up Cancellation. This offers an extra £50,000 cover per person upon referral, giving you added peace of mind knowing your high-value holiday is protected.

What Cruise Lines Go To Japan?

There are several options to choose from for a cruise to Japan, ranging from large, amenity-filled ships to more luxury vessels. Key operators include Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, and more. Princess Cruises is known for its extensive itineraries, often including local guest speakers, regional dining, and sailing to over 38 destinations. Norwegian Cruise Line offers a more relaxed experience with freestyle dining, while Celebrity Cruises are known for their more premium experiences. Whichever cruise line you choose, make sure you understand the specific Cruise Insurance Requirements to ensure a smooth onboard experience.

Here are a few more tips to help you plan for your cruise to Japan:

  • Timing Is Key: If visiting Japan during cherry-blossom season is on your agenda, you’ll want to take your cruise between the months of March and May – the peak seasons for cherry blossoms.
  • Check Itineraries: Lots of itineraries focus more on neighbouring countries like South Korea, so make sure to prioritise itineraries focused more specifically on Japan to allow you to make the most of your trip. Such itineraries will often feature ports like Tokyo (Yokohama), Osaka, Kobe, and Hakodate.
  • Pack Smart: Make sure to take smart-casual attire for evenings onboard your cruise, and comfortable walking shoes for exploring on-land. Don’t forget to pack modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for visiting temples or shrines in order to abide by the local customs.

Do pre-existing medical conditions need to be declared for Cruise Travel Insurance for Japan policies?

Yes. Any pre-existing medical conditions (any illness or injury previously diagnosed before taking out Travel Insurance), must be declared initially on your policy. Otherwise, you could risk paying costly medical bills if you become ill or need to seek emergency treatment abroad. At Just Travel Cover, we specialise in finding cover for over hundreds of conditions, including heart and circulatory conditions, cancer, autoimmune diseases, mental health conditions, digestive conditions, respiratory illnesses, and more. Are hiking and water sports included with Japan Cruise Travel Insurance?

This depends on the specifics. Hiking, for instance, is covered as standard under our policies provided that this is under 2,000 metres in altitude. Hiking beyond this level will require adding additional cover onto your policy, which you can do by giving us a call on the phone using the number at the top right of our website. As for water sports, this also depends. Taking scuba diving for example, this is covered as standard under 30m on the condition you are PADI qualified or equivalent to that depth, and provided you are adequately supervised. If you are unsure whether you require any additional cover for activities during your cruise, please give us a call and we can discuss your options.
