Is Single Trip Travel Insurance Right for Your Holiday?
Single Trip Travel Insurance covers one holiday for the dates and destinations you choose. It can suit anything from a short break or family holiday to a cruise or longer stay.
Tell us where you’re going, your full travel dates and who needs cover. We’ll use the details of your holiday to show you the Single Trip options available from our panel of insurers.
Several holidays planned? Compare this option with Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance before buying. Here’s how the two types of cover differ:
| Single Trip | Annual Multi-Trip | |
|---|---|---|
| Holidays covered | One holiday | Multiple holidays |
| Cover period | Your chosen holiday dates | 12-month policy period |
| Trip length | Maximum length depends on the policy | Maximum length applies to each individual trip |
| Cancellation cover | Starts as soon as you buy your policy | Can cover holidays booked during the policy period, subject to the policy terms |
| Medical conditions | Declare relevant medical conditions when you buy your policy and tell us about relevant changes in health before you travel | Declare relevant medical conditions when you buy your policy and tell us about relevant changes in health during the policy year |
When Does Single Trip Travel Insurance Cover You?
Single Trip Travel Insurance can protect you before your holiday begins as well as while you’re away. Here’s how your cover works from buying your policy through to returning home.
1. When You Book
Once your holiday is booked, you can arrange your Single Trip Travel Insurance. Cancellation cover can start from the date you buy your policy, providing protection for insured reasons before you travel, subject to the policy terms.
2. Before you Leave
Your cancellation cover continues before departure. Check that the names, travel dates and destinations on your policy are correct and that you have any additional cover you need, such as Cruise or Winter Sports cover. If your health or travel plans change, check whether you need to let us know.
3. While you’re Away
Once your holiday begins, your policy can provide cover for unexpected events while you’re away, including emergency medical expenses, repatriation, curtailment, baggage and missed departure, depending on the policy you choose.
4. When you Return
Your Single Trip policy ends when your insured trip finishes. If you book another holiday, you’ll need another Single Trip policy or an Annual Multi-Trip policy that covers your plans.
What Should You Consider When Choosing Single Trip Travel Insurance?
The best Single Trip Travel Insurance is the policy that fits the actual holiday, not the one with the highest limits or lowest price in isolation. Check these details before choosing:
- Travel dates: Include the day you leave home and the day you return
- Destinations: List every country you are planning to visit as part of your itinerary
- Trip cost: Match cancellation cover to the non-refundable amount paid per person
- Travellers: You can include multiple people on the same Single Trip policy. Add the details of everyone you want the policy to cover.
- Activities: Check that the policy covers the activities you plan to do. Cruises, Sports and some other activities may need additional cover.
- Baggage and valuables: Check the policy’s baggage limits are high enough for the belongings you’re taking, including the maximum amount you can claim for any one item.
Check current FCDO travel advice for every destination before departure. Travellers visiting Europe can also apply for a free GHIC, though this does not replace Travel Insurance.
What’s Covered with Single Trip Travel Insurance?
Limits vary by insurer and cover level. Options offered through Just Travel Cover may include:
- Emergency medical expenses and medically necessary repatriation, with limits up to £10 million
- Cancellation and curtailment following an insured event
- Baggage and personal belongings, with limits up to £3,500 per person
- Missed departure, with limits up to £1,500 per person
- Personal liability and 24-hour emergency medical assistance
- Smart Luggage on selected policies or as an optional benefit
Compare the actual benefits, excesses and exclusions. Bronze, Silver and Gold labels differ between insurers and do not guarantee the same level of protection.
Exclusions differ between policies. Common examples include:
- Medical conditions or health changes not disclosed when required
- Travel outside the dates or destinations shown on the policy
- Activities, cruises or winter sports without the relevant cover
- Events already known when the policy was purchased
- Claims linked to alcohol, illegal activity or reckless behaviour
- Valuables above the total or single-item baggage limits
Read the policy wording before purchase for the definitions, evidence requirements and full list of exclusions.
Single Trip Cover for Different Holidays
No two holidays are the same, and everyone travelling has their own set of requirements. That’s why it’s important to choose a policy that’s right for the way you travel.
Cruises
Going on a cruise? Cruise Travel Insurance can include additional benefits such as cabin confinement and missed port departure, depending on the policy. Check what your cruise line requires as well as the cover included with your policy.
Longer Trips
Single Trip Travel Insurance can also be suitable for longer holidays. Maximum trip lengths vary by insurer and can depend on factors including your age and destination, so enter your complete travel dates when getting a quote. Planning an extended holiday? Read our Long-Stay Travel Insurance guidance.
Families and Companions
Travelling with family or friends? You may be able to cover everyone together, depending on your circumstances and the policy available. Explore our Family Travel Insurance options for more information.
Higher-Value Holidays
Planning a more expensive holiday? Single Trip Travel Insurance can be suitable for higher-value trips, but it’s important to check that the cancellation limit reflects the non-refundable cost of your booking. Explore our Higher-Value Holiday Travel Insurance guidance if you need additional protection for a more expensive trip.
Single Trip Travel Insurance With Medical Conditions
We can help people with hundreds of pre-existing medical conditions find Single Trip Travel Insurance, subject to medical screening and insurer acceptance.
When getting a quote, tell us about your relevant medical conditions and answer the screening questions accurately. Depending on your health, we may ask about medication, recent treatment, hospital stays or investigations.
If your health changes after you’ve bought your policy, let us know so we can check what this means for your cover before you travel.
Some of the common conditions we regularly help travellers find cover for include:
- Asthma and other respiratory conditions, including COPD. Read about Respiratory Conditions Travel Insurance.
- Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Screening may ask how the condition is controlled and about recent complications. See Travel Insurance for Diabetes.
- High blood pressure and other heart and circulatory conditions, including atrial fibrillation, angina and a previous heart attack. Read about Heart Conditions Travel Insurance.
- Cancer, whether treatment is ongoing, complete or you are in remission. Read our Cancer Travel Insurance guide.
