Stoma Travel Insurance
Find Travel Insurance for a Stoma
According to Colostomy UK, an estimated one in 335 people are currently living with a stoma. It can cause big changes to your daily life requiring careful maintenance and regular check-ups, but it doesn’t have to get in the way of your travel plans.
With specialist Travel Insurance for a stoma, you can travel with confidence, knowing you should be covered under the terms of your policy for any unexpected or emergency medical expenses abroad. You also get peace of mind with cancellation cover, should a change in health status mean you unexpectedly need to cancel your trip, plus repatriation. This is the cost of getting you home in a medical emergency where you are unable to receive sufficient treatment abroad.

Travel Insurance for Stoma FAQs
Do I need to declare a stoma on Travel Insurance?
Yes. A stoma is considered a pre-existing medical condition, or something which treats a pre-existing medical condition, and must be declared on your Travel Insurance. This is to make sure you have an adequate level of cover when travelling should you need unexpected medical treatment relating to your stoma. Without specific Travel Insurance, you are at risk of costly medical expenses abroad should you need to make a claim.
What does Stoma Travel Insurance cover?
Stoma Travel Insurance covers emergency medical expenses abroad, cancellation, and repatriation back to the UK. These are essential benefits to make sure you are protected against unforeseen medical bills, which vary across countries. It also includes baggage cover, protecting your belongings in the event your luggage gets lost or stolen on your trip.
Is there an upper-age limit for Stoma Travel Insurance?
No. At Just Travel Cover, we offer no upper-age limit cover for all our policies, including stoma Travel Insurance. This means whether you’re in your 50s or your 80s, we’ll happily help you find an insurer who can meet your needs.
How does having a stoma bag affect the cost of insurance?
Having a stoma bag may affect the cost of your Travel Insurance compared to a non-stoma bag wearer or someone with no pre-existing medical conditions. It’s important to remember, however, that having a stoma is not the only thing that affects the cost of your insurance. Your age, the destination, duration of your trip, and any other pre-existing medical conditions are also factors that determine the price. Failing to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to make your policy cheaper puts you at risk having any claim declined on your policy.
Can I fly with a stoma bag?
Yes, provided that your medical practitioner is in agreement with your travel plans and deems you ‘fit to travel’, there is no reason why not. You may need to do some more planning and it might be a good idea to check with your airline in case there are any additional requirements you need to be aware of.
What if I am awaiting a colostomy or ileostomy?
If you are awaiting colostomy or ileostomy surgery to receive a stoma, you’ll need to consult with your doctor or surgeon before travelling. It may be that you need to wait until a later date to book your trip to allow plenty of time for recovery and routine check-ups post-procedure.
