With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place across the USA, Canada and Mexico, thousands of UK football fans are already planning what could be the trip of a lifetime. But while securing match tickets, flights and accommodation may be top of the agenda, Travel Insurance is one thing supporters shouldn’t leave until the last minute.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is reminding travellers to check their Travel Insurance before they travel, as unexpected medical bills, trip cancellations and travel disruptions could quickly turn a dream trip into an expensive mistake.
The 2026 tournament will be the largest FIFA World Cup ever staged, with matches spread across three countries and 16 host cities. That means many supporters could be taking multiple flights, crossing international borders and following their team from city to city.
With complex itineraries comes the increased risk of delays, cancellations, lost baggage and missed connections. Travel Insurance can help protect you financially if things don’t go to plan.
In 2024 alone, travel insurers paid out £35 million to help customers visiting the USA and Canada cover the cost of medical bills and other unexpected losses. Considering the cost of medical care is significantly higher across the pond, insurance is something fans won’t want to forget.
Across all destinations, travel insurers paid out £262 million in medical expense claims during 2024, representing more than half (56%) of all claims paid to customers (£472 million). Having appropriate Travel Insurance in place can help provide protection for emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, repatriation costs and other unexpected events that could otherwise leave travellers facing substantial bills.
Many travellers don’t realise that purchasing Travel Insurance early can provide valuable cancellation cover before they even leave home. By arranging cover as soon as flights, accommodation or tournament plans are booked, travellers may be protected if they need to cancel their trip due to an insured reason before departure.
With the tournament taking place across three countries, many supporters may be planning multi-centre trips and travelling between host cities.
Before travelling, it’s important to check that your policy covers all destinations on your itinerary and that any pre-existing medical conditions have been declared to your insurer.
Travellers should also familiarise themselves with any policy exclusions and understand what level of cover they have for cancellation, baggage and medical emergencies.
As well as arranging Travel Insurance, travellers should regularly check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice here for the countries they are visiting.
The FCDO advises travellers heading to the World Cup to stay informed about entry requirements, local laws and safety guidance throughout the tournament.
Whether you’re travelling to one match or following your team across North America, the right Travel Insurance can provide peace of mind if the unexpected happens.
