The Many Advantages of Travel Insurance

Having an adequate Travel Insurance policy remains as important as ever, especially for those who have pre-existing medical conditions.

In 2026, we’re seeing more travellers recognise this importance, with a noticeable shift towards higher levels of cover, such as Gold Travel Insurance policies, as people look for greater protection and peace of mind when travelling.

With so many insurers and varying levels of cover on the market, it can be overwhelming trying to find the right policy for you.

Travel Insurance is unique to each individual with a number of factors that can affect the amount you pay, such as destination, duration, age, pre-existing medical conditions and any activities you plan on doing while on holiday.

At Just Travel Cover we work with a panel of insurers which allows us to compare prices and offer three different levels of cover; Bronze, Silver, and Gold Insurance. Generally speaking, a higher level of cover provides higher limits for medical treatment abroad, cancellation and lost luggage with a lower excess amount.

With more customers now opting for higher quality protection, let’s take a look at our policies and explore Gold Travel Insurance features, including the benefits and advantages of Gold cover:

1. Higher Cover Limits

As mentioned above a higher level of cover can provide higher limits. On our Gold policies, you can expect:

  • Up to £15 million per person for emergency medical expenses whilst abroad
  • Up to £12,500 per person if you need to cancel your holiday
  • Up to £3,000 per person cover for loss or theft of your baggage

If travelling to Europe, it’s important to remember that the EHIC/GHIC is not a substitute for Travel Insurance. It does not cover repatriation should you need to be flown home, nor does it cover cruise travel or any accommodation expenses your family may incur if your stay needs to be extended for medical reasons.

The ABI recently cited a case involving the cost of treating a fall in France. While the GHIC covered 80% of the medical treatment, this still left £16,000 to be paid, including the cost of returning to the UK on a stretcher. In this instance, the remaining costs were covered by the travel insurer – without cover, this amount would have been payable by the customer. Securing Gold Insurance acts as a safety net, helping to protect you from unexpected medical expenses.

2. Smart Luggage

We’ve all been there – the dreaded wait at the airport for your luggage to arrive, wondering why yours always seems to be the last case off the carousel.

More recently, travel disruption and delays have remained a key concern for holidaymakers, reinforcing the value of added benefits like Smart Luggage.

In 2024, more than 33.4 million bags were mishandled by the travel industry (source: SITA, 2025) which is why our Smart Luggage Policy is an added benefit when travelling this year.

Smart Luggage provides a real-time payout of up to £500* paid straight into your bank account or PayPal should your luggage not arrive at the airport and cannot be located after 48 hours.

That’s cash in your bank, right when you need it the most!

No lengthy claim forms and all processed through your smart phone.

Smart Luggage is included in all our Gold Travel Insurance policies, available to add on to our Silver and Bronze or can be purchased separately from just £3.50 at smartluggage.io.

3. Low or Zero excess

Naturally, we all hope never to have to claim, but accidents happen and that’s when Travel Insurance comes to the rescue. However, if you do claim there is usually an excess to pay – on our Gold Insurance policies the maximum excess is £100, depending on the insurer and claim type. On our Bronze policies, the excess can be as much as £500.

If you’re still unsure about the type or level of cover you require, you can chat with us via our Live Chat feature or give one of our dedicated team a call, who can discuss your individual requirements with you and help find the right Travel Insurance policy for your travel needs.

With our Gold Travel Insurance cover, you can enjoy significant advantages, combining essential Travel Insurance features like cancellation cover and emergency medical expenses and the unique advantage Gold Insurance benefits, including Smart Luggage and lower excess fees.

As more travellers choose higher levels of cover for greater reassurance, Gold policies continue to offer one of the most comprehensive options available – helping ensure you’re protected should anything not go according to plan, and giving you peace of mind to enjoy your holiday.
