Travel Insurance for Over 65s That Fits Your Plans

If you’re looking for travel insurance over 65, the main thing is finding cover that fits how and where you plan to travel. You might be taking several holidays throughout the year, spending longer abroad, going on a cruise or simply planning your usual break.

Your age is just one factor insurers consider. Your destination, trip length, holiday cost and any pre-existing medical conditions can also affect the policies and prices available. At Just Travel Cover, we compare options from our panel of insurers based on your individual circumstances, so you can choose the cover that suits your plans.

Does Your Bank-Account Travel Insurance Still Cover You at 65?

If you have travel insurance through a packaged bank account, check the cover before booking or travelling, even if you’ve used the policy before. Some bank policies stop or change cover at 65, while others have age limits of 70, 75 or 80. There may also be limits on trip length or cover for pre-existing medical conditions, which could leave you without the protection you expect if you need to claim.

Check the policy for both you and your partner, including the maximum age, medical conditions, destinations and permitted trip length. If the cover no longer suits your plans, compare standalone travel insurance before paying for a bank-account upgrade. At Just Travel Cover, we compare policies from a panel of insurers, including options with no upper age limit, so you can see what cover is available for your age, health and holiday plans.

More Time to Travel: Which Policy Fits Your Plans?

A longer retirement holiday

Single trip travel insurance may suit a long-haul tour, several weeks visiting family or an extended winter stay. Enter the complete travel dates because maximum durations can change by age and insurer

Several trips now you have more flexibility

Annual multi-trip travel insurance may suit frequent city breaks, visits to family and holidays outside school dates. Check the maximum duration of each trip, not just the 12-month policy period.

A cruise or once-in-a-lifetime retirement trip

Cruise travel insurance can include cabin confinement, missed port departure and itinerary-change benefits. For a world cruise, rail journey or escorted long-haul tour, check every destination, the full duration and whether activities or excursions are covered.

A higher-value retirement holiday

Match cancellation cover to your non-refundable cost per person. This is particularly important for cruises, long-haul tours and special retirement trips. Eligible Single Trip policies may offer Boost Cancellation, while Top-Up Cancellation Cover may help if you already have a policy. Terms apply.

Over 65s Travel Insurance with Medical Conditions

Declare every relevant pre-existing medical condition, including conditions controlled by medication. At 65, this might include a long-managed condition or a recent diagnosis discovered during a routine health check. Accurate screening helps insurers assess the cover available and reduces the risk of a related claim being affected.
Medical screening asks questions relevant to the condition you declare, such as medication, recent treatment, hospital admissions or changes in health. Keep your prescription and appointment details nearby. If you are newly retired and changing GP, pharmacy or repeat-prescription arrangements, gather the information before starting your quote.

Travelling with regular medication?

Tell the insurer about conditions controlled by medication, even if you feel well. Before travelling, request repeat prescriptions early, take enough medicine for the whole trip plus a reasonable allowance for delays, and keep essential medication in hand luggage. Carry a copy of your prescription and check destination rules for controlled drugs, injections and refrigerated medicines.

Our Expert Says

“At 65, check whether the travel insurance you relied on while working still applies. Bank-account cover may change at a set age, and a longer retirement trip can exceed the maximum duration on an annual policy. Compare those limits with your medical and cancellation cover before paying for the holiday.”

What Can Over 65s Travel Insurance Cover?

Cover and limits vary by insurer and policy. Options available through our panel can include:

  • Emergency medical expenses and repatriation up to £10 Million
  • Cancellation cover up to £50,000 per person
  • Curtailment cover up to £12,500 per person
  • Baggage cover up to £3,500 per person
  • Missed departure cover up to £1,500 per person
  • 24-hour emergency medical assistance

These are maximum limits across policies available through our panel, not standard cover on every policy. Check the quotation and policy wording for the cover, excesses and exclusions that apply.

Exclusions vary between insurers. Depending on the policy, you may not be covered for:

  • Medical conditions that should have been declared but were not
  • A change in health that should have been reported before travel
  • Travelling against medical advice or to receive treatment
  • Travel to a destination where the FCDO advises against travel
  • Cruises, winter sports or activities that require additional cover
  • Known events or deciding that you no longer want to travel

This is a general guide. Read the policy wording for the exclusions, conditions and claim requirements that apply.

What Affects the Cost of Travel Insurance Over 65?

The price depends on your age, destination, trip length, medical history, holiday cost and chosen cover. Retirement can give you more freedom to travel for longer or outside peak periods. Off-peak dates may reduce the holiday price, but a longer duration or destination with expensive private healthcare can still increase the insurance premium.
Compare the limits and excess as well as the premium. A cheaper policy may have a higher excess, lower cancellation cover or a shorter maximum trip duration.

What Should You Compare Before Buying?

Once you’ve been shown the policies available for your circumstances, compare more than just the price. Look at:

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation limits
Cancellation cover against the cost of your holiday
The excess you would pay if you claim
Maximum trip duration
Baggage and personal belongings cover
Any cruise or activity cover you need

    Practical Checks Before You Travel

    • Check any travel insurance included with your bank account before relying on it
    • Buy cover soon after booking so eligible cancellation cover can start
    • Take enough medication for the trip, plus extra for delays, and keep essentials in hand luggage
    • Carry a prescription copy and check airline rules for liquids, needles and medical equipment
    • Save the emergency-assistance number and keep policy details accessible
    • Check FCDO travel advice for every destination. For eligible European trips, apply for a GHIC. It can provide access to necessary state healthcare, but it does not replace travel insurance.

    Over 65s Travel Insurance FAQs

Can I get travel insurance if I am over 65?

Yes. Cover is available for travellers over 65, including selected travel insurance with no upper age limit. Your age, health, destination and trip length will affect the options shown, so compare the policy details rather than assuming cover is unavailable.

Does travel insurance from my bank account stop when I turn 65?

It can, but there is no single age limit across packaged bank accounts. Some policies stop or change at 65, while others continue to 70, 75 or later. Check the certificate and policy wording for your exact account, including medical-condition approval, trip-duration limits and whether a partner is covered. MoneyHelper’s over-65s travel insurance guidance also recommends checking the age limit before relying on packaged-account cover.

How much does travel insurance for over 65s cost?

There is no set price. Insurers consider your age, medical history, destination, trip duration, holiday cost and chosen cover. Travelling outside school holidays may reduce the cost of the trip itself, but insurance can still cost more for a long stay or a destination with expensive medical care. Compare limits, excesses and maximum trip duration as well as the premium.

Can I get over 65s travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes. Cover may be available for hundreds of pre-existing medical conditions, subject to screening and insurer terms. Declare every relevant condition, including those controlled by medication. Screening may ask about treatment, medication, tests or recent hospital admissions.

Can I get annual travel insurance if I am over 65?

Yes. Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance may suit people who plan to use retirement for several holidays during the year. Check the maximum duration permitted for each trip, as limits can vary by age and policy. Compare the annual price with separate Single Trip policies for the holidays you actually expect to take.

Can I get long-stay travel insurance over 65?

Yes. Single trip travel insurance for over 65s can cover longer holidays, with selected policies offering trips of up to 365 days, depending on your age and insurer.

If you’re considering annual multi-trip travel insurance, individual trips can be covered for up to 93 days on selected policies, with limits varying by age and insurer. An annual policy covers multiple trips during the year rather than one continuous stay.

Enter your full travel dates when getting a quote and we’ll show the options available for your age and trip length.

Can I get travel insurance for Ireland if I am over 65?

Yes. Choose the correct destination and make sure the policy covers the full trip. Northern Ireland is treated as a UK destination, where minimum accommodation or distance conditions may apply. The Republic of Ireland is a European destination. A GHIC may help with necessary state healthcare there, but it does not replace travel insurance. Read our guide to travel insurance for Ireland.

Can my partner be included on the same policy?

Yes. If you and your partner live at the same address and are travelling together, you can usually be covered on the same policy. You’ll each provide your own traveller details and declare any pre-existing medical conditions, so your individual circumstances are taken into account when getting a quote.

When should I buy over 65s travel insurance?

It’s best to arrange your over 65s travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday. With single trip travel insurance, cancellation cover can start from the policy start date, subject to the policy terms. This means you can have protection in place for eligible cancellation reasons in the run-up to your holiday, rather than waiting until you’re due to travel.

Is 65 the State Pension age in the UK?

Not for everyone. Your State Pension age depends on your date of birth and is currently moving from 66 to 67. There is also no compulsory retirement age of 65. You can still buy over 65s travel insurance whether you are retired, working full time or reducing your hours. Check your personal State Pension age on GOV.UK.

Does retiring affect my travel insurance?

Retirement itself doesn’t usually affect your travel insurance, but having more time to travel may mean taking more holidays, travelling for longer or visiting more destinations. If your travel plans change, compare single trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance and check the maximum trip length, cancellation cover and destinations included.

Can I take prescription medication abroad after 65?

Yes. Take enough prescription medication for your holiday, plus extra in case of delays, and keep essential medicines in your hand luggage where possible. When getting your over 65s travel insurance quote, make sure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions linked to your medication.

Is annual travel insurance suitable for a long retirement trip?

It depends on how long you’re going away for. annual multi-trip travel insurance covers multiple holidays during the year, but there is a maximum duration for each individual trip. If you’re planning one extended holiday, single trip travel insurance may be more suitable.

Enter your full travel dates when getting a quote so you can compare the options available for your trip length and age.
