Can I get Travel Insurance with a heart condition?

Travel Insurance is available for many people with heart and circulatory conditions, from high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation to a previous heart attack, heart surgery or an implanted device. We’ll ask you some questions about your health and holiday so we can show you the options available.

Just Travel Cover works with a panel of insurers with different medical criteria. Once you have told us about your health, destination and travel dates, we will only show policies available for the information you provide. You can then compare the price with the medical cover, cancellation limit, excess and other benefits before choosing.

The cover available and the price you pay will depend on your individual circumstances. It’s important to declare the medical conditions we ask about accurately, as not doing so could affect a future claim.

Find guidance for your heart or circulatory condition

Heart and circulatory conditions can be connected, but the information needed for Travel Insurance is not always the same. Choose the guide that best reflects your diagnosis or treatment. If more than one applies, declare each condition requested during medical screening.

Angina and coronary heart disease

Angina Travel Insurance and Ischaemic Heart Disease Travel Insurance explain cover where narrowed arteries affect blood flow to the heart.

Atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias

Atrial Fibrillation Travel Insurance and Arrhythmia Travel Insurance cover the questions commonly asked about irregular heart rhythms, treatment and medication.

Heart attack

Heart Attack Travel Insurance explains what to declare after a heart attack and what to consider before travelling again.

Cardiomyopathy and heart failure

Cardiomyopathy Travel Insurance and Heart Failure Travel Insurance provide guidance for conditions that affect how the heart muscle works or pumps blood.

Angioplasty, stents and bypass surgery

Travel Insurance After Angioplasty and Heart Bypass Travel Insurance explain how a procedure and the condition behind it can affect screening.

Pacemakers and implanted heart devices

Pacemaker Travel Insurance covers the information you may need about the device, the reason it was fitted and your follow-up care.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol

High Blood Pressure Travel Insurance and High Cholesterol Travel Insurance explain why controlled conditions and prescribed medication may still need to be declared.

Stroke and other circulatory conditions

Stroke Travel Insurance provides more specific guidance if you have had a stroke or related treatment.

What will I be asked during medical screening?

Medical screening helps us understand your medical history so we can show you the Travel Insurance options available. The questions you’re asked will depend on your condition and the answers you give. Having details of your medication, treatment and recent appointments to hand can make the process easier.

  • The name of each heart or circulatory condition you have been asked to declare
  • Any heart attack, stroke, surgery, angioplasty or other treatment
  • A pacemaker, defibrillator, stent or other implanted device
  • Current medication, symptoms and recent changes in your health
  • Hospital admissions, planned tests, procedures or specialist appointments
  • Other related conditions requested during screening, such as diabetes or kidney problems

Use the diagnosis given by your doctor where possible. If you are unsure how to record a procedure, device or connected condition, call our team, and we can take you through the questions.

How we compare Travel Insurance for heart conditions

Your medical history is one part of your Travel Insurance quote. We’ll also ask about who is travelling, where you’re going, how long you’ll be away and the type of holiday you have planned. We use these details to show you the options available from our panel of insurers.

How we compare Travel Insurance for heart conditions

Your medical history is one part of your Travel Insurance quote. We’ll also ask about who is travelling, where you’re going, how long you’ll be away and the type of holiday you have planned. We use these details to show you the options available from our panel of insurers.

Medical cover

Check the cover available for the medical conditions you’ve declared, including the limit for emergency medical treatment and medically necessary repatriation.

Cancellation cover

Check that the cancellation limit reflects the non-refundable cost of your holiday. If you’re planning a higher-value trip, you may need additional cancellation cover.

Trip limits and activities

Check the maximum trip length, geographical area and whether you need additional cover for things such as a cruise or particular activities.

Excesses and policy terms

Compare the excesses, cover limits and policy terms so you understand what each option provides before you choose.

What can heart condition Travel Insurance cover?

Travel Insurance can provide protection against a range of unexpected events before and during your holiday. Depending on the policy you choose, this can include:

  • Emergency medical treatment abroad for declared and accepted heart and circulatory conditions
  • Repatriation to the UK when medically necessary and covered by the policy
  • Cancellation or curtailment if an insured change in health affects the trip
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage, medication or medical equipment, within the policy limits
  • 24-hour emergency medical assistance

Across the Just Travel Cover panel, policies can provide up to £10 million for emergency medical expenses, cancellation cover up to £50,000 per person upon referral and baggage cover up to £3,500 per person. Cover limits vary between policies, so check the benefits shown with your quote and read the policy wording before you buy.

  • A heart condition, procedure or related diagnosis that should have been declared but was not
  • Travelling against medical advice or travelling to receive planned medical treatment
  • A known event, expected treatment or unresolved symptom that falls outside the policy terms
  • Claims outside the destination, trip length, activities or benefit limits shown on the policy
  • Travel against applicable Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice

Every policy has exclusions, and these can vary between insurers. Check the policy wording for the cover you choose, particularly if your health changes after you buy your policy.

Match the policy to the holiday

As well as your health, where you’re going and the type of holiday you have planned can affect the cover you need. Whether it’s a short European break, a cruise or a longer trip, we can help you explore the options available.

One trip or several?

Single Trip Travel Insurance covers one holiday. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can cover several trips in 12 months, subject to the maximum length allowed for each trip and the policy terms.

Cruises and higher-value holidays

Cruise Travel Insurance may include benefits such as cabin confinement or missed port departure. If the holiday cost is above the standard cancellation limit, consider Top-Up Cancellation Cover or Boost Cancellation Insurance.

Travelling with someone else?

Putting travelling companions on the same policy can be useful if an insured change in one person’s health affects the whole booking. Check who is covered if the trip has to be cancelled or cut short.

Our Expert Says

“When someone has more than one heart condition, having an up-to-date medication list and details of any procedures or implanted devices to hand can make medical screening easier. Giving us accurate information about each condition helps us show the Travel Insurance options available based on your medical history and holiday plans.”

Planning a holiday with a heart condition

Travel Insurance does not confirm that you are medically fit to travel. Speak to your doctor if you have had a recent heart attack, surgery, hospital stay or change in symptoms. Your airline may also ask for medical clearance or assistance information.

Plan ahead with your medication

Carry essential medication in your hand luggage, with an up-to-date medication list and enough supplies for the journey. The British Heart Foundation’s travel guidance also covers medication, airport assistance, implanted devices and travel after recent treatment.

Think about the journey and destination

Your destination and journey may also be worth discussing with your doctor or treating team, particularly if you’re travelling somewhere with a very different climate or at high altitude. You may also want to check access to healthcare at your destination and arrange any airport or mobility assistance you need in advance. Before booking and again before departure, read the latest FCDO travel advice for your destination.

Travel Insurance for Heart Conditions FAQs

Can I get cover for more than one heart condition?

Travel Insurance can be available if you have more than one heart or circulatory condition. Tell us about each condition when asked during medical screening and we’ll show you the options available based on the information you provide.

Do I need to declare controlled high blood pressure or high cholesterol?

You should tell us about these conditions when asked during medical screening, even if they’re well controlled with medication. It’s important to answer the questions accurately, as not declaring a condition when required could affect a future claim.

Can I get Travel Insurance after a heart attack, surgery or stent?

Travel Insurance can still be available after a heart attack, heart surgery or having a stent fitted. We’ll ask you some questions about your treatment, your health now and any follow-up care so we can show you the options available. Your treating team should advise you on when you’re ready to travel.

Will a heart condition make Travel Insurance more expensive?

Your medical history is one of several factors that can affect the cost of Travel Insurance. Your age, destination, trip length, holiday cost and the cover you choose can also affect the price. When comparing your options, look at the cover, limits and excess as well as the premium.

Is there an age limit for heart condition Travel Insurance?

Age limits differ between insurers and policy types. Selected policies on the Just Travel Cover panel have no upper age limit, although trip length, destination and Annual Multi-Trip availability can still vary. Your quote will show the options available for your age and other details.

Is Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip cover better for a heart condition?

The type of cover that suits your plans will depend on how often you’re travelling and the trips you have planned. Single Trip Travel Insurance covers one holiday, while Annual Multi-Trip can cover several eligible trips during a 12-month policy period. Maximum trip lengths and other terms vary between policies.

Should my travelling companion be on the same policy?

Depending on the policy, having your travelling companion on the same cover may provide protection if an insured change in one person’s health affects your travel plans. Check the cancellation and curtailment terms when comparing your options.
