Is Annual Travel Insurance Right for Your Plans?
Annual Travel Insurance can be a convenient option if you’re planning more than one holiday during the year. Instead of arranging a new policy for every trip, one policy can cover multiple eligible holidays during its 12-month term.
Your 12-month policy period doesn’t mean you can travel continuously for 12 months. Each holiday has a maximum trip length, which varies between policies and can also depend on factors such as your age and destination.
Think about all the holidays you have planned, particularly where you’re travelling and how long you’ll be away. Make sure your longest holiday falls within the maximum trip length available and that your chosen geographical region covers all the destinations you plan to visit.
If you’re only taking one holiday, or have a longer trip that isn’t covered by your Annual policy, Single Trip Travel Insurance may be more suitable.

Things to Consider When Choosing Annual Travel Insurance
Where are you Travelling?
Choose a geographical region that covers all the destinations you plan to visit during the policy year. Depending on the insurer, worldwide cover may differ depending on whether you’re travelling to the USA, Canada or the Caribbean. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before each holiday.
How Long Will Each Holiday Be?
Annual policies have a maximum duration for each individual trip. This varies between insurers and can also depend on factors such as your age and destination.
Check that your longest planned holiday falls within the maximum trip length shown on your policy.
How Much Have Your Holidays Cost?
Check that the cancellation cover available is enough for the eligible non-refundable costs of your holidays, such as flights and accommodation. Cover limits apply per insured person and vary between policies.
Are You Going on a Cruise or Planning Activities?
Some holidays and activities may need additional cover. If you’re going on a cruise, skiing or snowboarding, check whether your policy includes the protection you need or whether you need to add Cruise Travel Insurance or Winter Sports Travel Insurance cover.
What’s Covered?
What Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance Covers
Cover varies between insurers and policies. Depending on the option you choose, Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can include:
- Emergency medical expenses and medically necessary repatriation, with limits up to £10 million
- Cancellation or curtailment following an insured event
- Baggage and personal belongings, with limits up to £3,500 per person
- Missed departure, with limits up to £1,500 per person
- 24-hour emergency medical assistance
- Smart Luggage on selected policies or as an optional benefit
Read the policy wording for the limits, excesses, definitions and evidence required for a claim. Bronze, Silver and Gold labels are not identical across insurers, so compare the benefits rather than relying on the tier name.
What is not Usually Covered?
Every Annual Travel Insurance policy has exclusions, and these vary between insurers. Depending on the policy, you will not be covered for:
- Trips longer than the maximum duration stated in the policy
- Travel outside the selected geographical region
- Medical conditions or changes in health that were not disclosed when required
- Claims linked to alcohol, illegal activity or reckless behaviour
- Activities, cruises or winter sports without the relevant cover
- Events already known when the cover started
This isn’t a complete list. Check the policy wording for the cover you choose, and contact our team if anything is unclear before you buy or before taking a trip.
Annual Travel Insurance With Medical Conditions
We can help people with hundreds of pre-existing medical conditions find Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, subject to medical screening and insurer acceptance.
When getting a quote, tell us about any relevant medical conditions for each person you want to include on the policy. We’ll ask some questions about your health so we can show you the Annual Travel Insurance options available from our panel of insurers.
As your policy covers trips throughout the year, it’s important to check what you need to do if your health changes after you’ve bought your policy. If you receive a new diagnosis, treatment or medication, or your health changes in another way, let us know before your next trip so we can check what this means for your cover.
Some of the common conditions we regularly help travellers find cover for include:
- Asthma and other respiratory conditions, including COPD. Read about Respiratory Conditions Travel Insurance.
- Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Screening may ask how the condition is controlled and about recent complications. See Travel Insurance for Diabetes.
- High blood pressure and other heart and circulatory conditions, including atrial fibrillation, angina and a previous heart attack. Read about Heart Conditions Travel Insurance.
- Cancer, whether treatment is ongoing, complete or you are in remission. Read our Cancer Travel Insurance guide.
More detailed guidance is available in our Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions section.
Age and maximum trip lengths can also affect the Annual policies available. If you’re looking for cover at an older age, explore our Travel Insurance with No Upper Age Limit section.

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance FAQs
How many trips does Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance cover?
An annual policy covers an unlimited number of eligible trips during its 12-month term. Each holiday still has to meet the policy’s maximum trip length, destination and activity rules.
When does cancellation cover begin on an annual policy?
Cancellation cover starts from your chosen policy start date, subject to the policy terms. This may be different from the date you buy your policy, so think about when you want your cancellation protection to begin, particularly if you already have a holiday booked.
Does an annual policy cover a three-month holiday?
Selected policies offer a maximum trip length of up to 93 days, subject to age, destination and other terms. Check the exact number of days shown with the quote. A longer trip may require Single Trip Travel Insurance.
How long can each trip be with Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?
Each policy has a maximum length for an individual trip. The limit varies between insurers and can depend on factors such as your age and destination. Check the maximum trip length shown when comparing your quote options to make sure it covers your planned holidays. If you’re planning a longer holiday, Single Trip Travel Insurance may provide other options.
Does Annual Travel Insurance cover Europe and worldwide travel?
Yes, European and worldwide options are available. Choose the geographical region that covers the destinations you plan to visit during the policy year.
Definitions can vary between insurers, particularly for worldwide policies that include the USA, Canada or the Caribbean, so check the destinations covered by the policy you choose.
Do I need to tell the insurer when my health changes?
Yes. If your health changes after you buy your Annual Travel Insurance, you may need to update your medical declaration before you travel. This includes a new diagnosis, new or increased medication, a hospital visit, new treatment, or being referred for tests or to a specialist.
Let us know about any changes before your next holiday so they can be reviewed and we can confirm what this means for your cover. Depending on the policy and the change in your health, your cover, terms or premium may need to be updated.
Does annual cover include cruises and winter sports?
Not always. Cruise and Winter Sports cover may be included with some policies or available as an additional option. If you’re planning a cruise, select ‘yes’ when asked about cruise cover, or add Winter Sports cover if you’re skiing or snowboarding. We’ll then only show you policies that include the cover you’ve told us you need.
Is Annual Travel Insurance cheaper than separate policies?
It depends on your travel plans and circumstances. The price can be affected by factors including how many holidays you’re taking, where you’re travelling, your age and any pre-existing medical conditions.
If you’re deciding between Annual Multi-Trip and Single Trip cover, compare the options available for your travel plans, looking at the cover and limits as well as the price.
