Everything you need to know about the United States of America

Before travelling to the USA from the UK, there are a few things you might want to consider. To ensure your journey goes smoothly we have created a list of our top travel tips when visiting America.

Entry requirements for the USA

Before travelling to America, you will need to apply for an ESTA (an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation). This automatic visa waiver programme is designed for people visiting the USA for leisure or business purposes, lasting up to 90 days. After filling in a quick online form and paying a small administration fee, you’re ready to travel. Your ESTA is valid for two years and allows British travellers to visit the USA multiple times within that period. The form is often instant – however, give yourself plenty of time as it needs to be completed three days before departure.

Do I need a Covid-19 test to enter the USA?

No, as of Monday 13 June 2022 you no longer need to present a negative Covid-19 test to enter the USA from the UK. Advice can change – you can check the FCDO and CDC websites for the latest advice.

The price isn’t always right

When buying items in America, the price of the product often doesn’t include sales tax; a similar concept to VAT, which varies state by state. This means you should account for an additional 2.9 to 7.25 per cent on top of the original sale price when purchasing items. Of the 50 states in the USA, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon are the five states with no sales tax at all.

State-dependent

If your holiday involves driving along Route 66, or across state borders, it is important to understand how the laws differ depending on the state you are visiting. Some states have strict laws regarding alcohol, whilst others have strict laws about smoking and littering. It’s important to research the locality of each state before visiting to ensure your possessions do not break any laws.

Despite this, the USA is a melting pot of culture, where you can expand your circle and meet people from all walks of life.

Hitting the highway

Access to public transport differs from state to state, and in most cases hiring a car will grant you more freedom over your holiday. If you decide on hiring a car, some states will accept a full UK licence while others will ask you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP); be sure to familiarise yourself with the individual state requirements before booking your rental.

It’s important to note that Travel Insurance for America doesn’t cover driving or damage to a rental car. However, our team at Just Travel Cover are available to help you with any questions or queries you have in regards to your American Road Trip.

Vaccines

We recommend visiting your doctor 4-6 weeks before your departure to check what vaccinations or boosters are required. This may include routine vaccinations, and travel-specific immunisations like Hepatitis A and B.

What are the entry requirements for the USA?

British passport holders will need prior authorisation to enter the United States. This will either be with a visa, Permanent Resident Card or the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). Most passport holders can get hold of an ESTA through the VWP. Although you can only apply for an ESTA online, friends, relatives and travel agents can fill in the application on your behalf. Unauthorised companies may claim they can apply on your behalf for a small fee – to remove any fraudulent risks, only apply via the official ESTA application website.
