Spain tops popular destination list for twenty-fifth year
A new study from travel body ABTA confirmed that Spain has been the most popular destination for UK travellers for the past 25 years. More than 13.6million Brits visited in 2018, despite the continued popularity of short flights to sunny Spain, the study also showed long-haul holidays are on the rise.

European countries dominated the top five most popular destinations with over 23 million visits to the following countries in 2018.
- Spain (13.6m)
- Italy (2.89m)
- Portugal (2.29m)
- Greece (2.24m)
- France (2.22m)

One of the most staggering stats in the report showed that 650,000 people headed from the UK to Mexico in 2018, a 3,500% rise since 1994!
It seems the reason people choose where to go has changed a lot too. Twenty five years ago people chose to holiday in locations based on where their friends or family had visited but now we want to be the first to visit a destination.
Holiday type
The package holiday remains the nation’s holiday of choice although there has been a shift from the ‘home away from home’ attitude with many travellers now keen to experience the local culture. As a result there is now a wide selection of packaged holidays to choose from including:
